While all the flagship smartphones are lying in the elite class, the budget segment is the most exciting segment among all. Xiaomi has overtaken Samsung in terms of selling mobiles in the budget segment. The market is very competitive as manufacturers are trying to be the best and the consumers are getting the best out of it. From bigger battery capacities, AMOLED displays, and multi-cam setups, the smartphones around the Rs 10,000 mark are the thing now. With the new Infinix S5 too, you get to see a large hole-punch display, four rear cameras, and generous helpings of RAM and storage. Coming at Rs. 8,999, is this a good alternative to smartphones like the Redmi Note 8 and the Realme 5? Let's check it out in the Infinix S5 review below:
The Infinix S5 is one of the fewest phones having a hole-punch display at this price tag. The display is a huge 6.6-inch IPS LCD panel with a 20:9 aspect ratio. Not a full HD one though! The panel is bright and saturated with good colors. The display has thin bezels all around except for the chin at the bottom. The whole body is made of plastic and the back panel gets a glossy finish, which is a fingerprint magnet. The device is fairly tall and is surely a two-handed device. That said, it doesn't feel too heavy and is slim too. Although, the glossy finish makes it slippery. The Infinix S5 comes in three color variants: Quetzal Cyan, Violet, and Nebula Black. The back panel has got a “feather” pattern which looks nice. There is a fingerprint sensor at the back and is differently textured from the rest of the body.
On the left, there is one SIM tray for two Nano-SIM cards and a separate one for a microSD card (up to 256GB). The right side houses the power and volume buttons whose tactile feedback is good. On the bottom, there is a headphone jack, a speaker grille, and a Micro-USB port.
Under the hood, the Infinix S5 has an entry-level MediaTek Helio P22 SoC which is coupled with 4 gigs of RAM and 64GB of storage. It is not one of the most powerful chipsets in this price range but it does a decent job. For casual use, the S5 performed quite well. Some apps are slugging and laggy and this is what we see in benchmark scores. On AnTuTu, this device scored 92,126 points while the T-Rex test in GFXbench returned just 26fps. Running games like PUBG Mobile at medium graphics might give you a sluggish experience at times. Although, simple games ran fine on this device.
Infinix S5 runs custom UI XOS Cheetah's version 5.5.2 out of the box which is based on Android 9 Pie.
The Infinix S5 has quad-cam setup on the rear panel which includes a primary 16-megapixel camera with an f/1.8 aperture, a 5-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2-megapixel depth sensor for portrait mode, and a low-light sensor. The main camera took time to lock focus at times and HDR processing even at daylight wasn't the best. The exposure was uneven in both dark and light areas and the dynamic range was weak. The close-up pics were better although. In the night sky, the primary camera captured decent pics but details weren't very good. Even worse, the ultra-wide camera captured poorer details.
On the front, the Infinix S5 houses a 32-megapixel selfie camera that captured decent selfies.
The Infinix S5 packs a high-capacity 4000mAh battery which didn't perform very well in the HD video loop test as the Infinix S5 stayed alive for just 13 hours and 24 minutes. It can give you a day and a half of usage if you are a casual user. With the bundled charger, it can get charged up to 40 percent in an hour. It takes around three long hours to charge the device completely. Fast charging is being missed here and it is a shame that Infinix hasn't added it.
